You can't get away with a straight run, and even on level one, you must maneuver to avoid falling to your demise. The race course is also not entirely linear, and there are breaks in the course with nothing below you but chance. This is where your jumps will come into play. The wider the gap, the more speed and jump you will need to cross the divide. If you see a series of swerving roads ahead with moving obstacles, slow down to retain your balance and avoid getting knocked off the road. The key to moving items is to move with them, even if you get close to the edge. Not all items can be jumped over. Grab the red flags along the road; they represent checkpoints and allow you to restart from there should you fall, while yellow flags let you collect coins, which you can use to buy new voxelated skins in the menu. Lastly, you can compete against other players by checking your score against theirs in the leaderboard, also available in the main menu.
